A Legacy of
Service and Salt:
—— Honoring Captain David Hust ——
November 30, 1965 - August 23, 2023
Captain Dave wasn’t just the soul of Mad Shark Charters; he was a man of immense depth, shaped by a lifetime of service and an unshakeable sense of humor. To know Dave was to understand that a bad day on the water beat a good day anywhere else. When he was at the helm, he had a way of inserting perfectly timed jokes as the trips unfolded. Oftentimes those same jokes turned into legendary stories that entertained his guests from all over the United States and other countries.
His journey began in Eastern Oklahoma, but, after serving his country, his heart ultimately found its home in the winding, diverse waters of Brunswick, GA. He navigated life with the same precision he used to navigate the coast, guided by a compass that pointed toward adventure, family, and a profound dedication to his country.
—— The Captain’s Code
A Soldier’s Discipline: Before he was a captain, Dave was a warrior. His 22-year military career was defined by elite service, including deployment in Operation Desert Storm with the 82nd Airborne Division and his time as a Special Ops candidate. That same grit and tactical "can-do" spirit became the backbone of every Mad Shark expedition.
Wit and Wisdom: Dave’s laughter was as constant as the tide. He had a way of cutting through the tension with a quick remark, reminding us all that if you aren't having fun, you aren't doing it right. While the ocean was his playground, his family was his anchor, providing the joy that fueled his life on the docks.
The Calm in the Storm: Beyond his technical skill, Dave possessed a rare, steady presence. Whether facing a technical glitch or a sudden squall, he remained the unflappable center of the deck, instilling confidence in everyone around him with a steady hand and a reassuring grin.
On August 23, 2023, Captain Dave crossed the horizon, leaving behind a wake of memories that will never fade. There are many people who have fond memories of a fishing trip booked with Mad Shark Charters. At the center of their tales of adventure is Captain Dave who gave everything within himself to put a smile on everyone he came in contact with.
While the docks might feel a little quieter without his laugh, the Mad Shark legacy is in steady hands. Dave’s vision and passion now rest with his brother, Adam Hust, who will continue to guide the fleet with the same spirit, military precision, and family pride that Dave championed.
Rest easy, Captain Dave.
As you gave others the gift of making memories, we look back at our memory of you as a gift that continues to bring joy to the numerous lives that you touched.
